Jane during the holidays

Well, I’m still on Palladia, fluid treatment, appetite stimulants and Prednoisone.

And I’m still here, even if my right eye no longer is. It’s a common outcome to radiation. So I’ve had to add partial blindness to my long list of surprises to adjust to. I do bump into things, so I have to be careful where I go.

Next month will be 1 year since I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. Just being here nearly a year later is a feat in the face of this most combative opponent.

For those of you concerned, I am not in any pain. Though I’m skinny as a scarf, I do manage to enjoy my food, just not as many times a day as in the past. And then there’s this pesty thing called “cancer wasting,” when the cancer steals the calories ingested from food for its own selfish purposes of growing like a beanstalk. Hopefully the Palladia is stealing Cancer’s oxygen supply so that it deflates like a burst balloon. Well, tis the season for flights of fantasy.

Jane sleeping in snow

When I’m not resting, I’m generally my old self, taking comfort in a human lap, and the fake snow under the Christmas tree, which by the way, has been the warmest place to be these days as winter temps have finally been giving steamy South Florida a break. (See photo).

Enjoy the holiday season, my friends!

  1. Jane, you are a very courageous kitty. You have much strength & a very loving family. Keep fighting & get in that tree snow. We love you & hope you have a great Christmas & a Happy New Year !

  2. I’m still here cheering you on, Jane. I understand all you and your humans are going through as my George and I experienced this nasty cancer together. George, at the recommendation of our vet, had a feeding tube for about 7 months. He was still able to eat and drink on his own if he wanted to, but giving him the proper nutrients and calories gave him a whole new lease on life and maintained his handsome 20+lb self for quite some time.

The feeding tube is no big deal, quick to insert and, according to George at the time, got big purrs and two paws up for a review. If your humans would like to read about his journey, I’ll include a link. There are pics of George, too. You’ll likely think he was quite handsome.

Best wishes to you and yours, Faith

  3. Oops. I forgot the link! Humans are so forgetful!

    • Thank you, Faith. Jane did have a feeding tube after her initial surgery. We recently inquired about putting it in again. Her vets feared the stress would do her more harm than good. Also, at this point, she’s in a cancer wasting phase, when the cancer steals the calories she does ingest.
George sounds like a cat Jane would have liked to have known. Thanks so much for sharing his and your journey!

  5. Holly and I love the picture of you under the tree. I think my people will put up my tree tomorrow. Today I’m feeling pretty good, am enjoying meals, and am appreciating my hiatus from Palladia. Sure hope somebody finds a cure for our nemesis soon.
    We love you, Jane.

  6. Long Lost Cousin Kate

Jane looks all comfy and cozy curled up for a nap. She’s a wonderful gift under your tree.
